Miriam Chapin Phillips was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on June 3, 1894, the daughter of Milton C. and Marcia H. Eastman Phillips. her mother died in 1912, which is also the last year the family is listed in the Oshkosh City Directory. Miriam's father died in Chicago in 1916. Miriam graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, and became a dance teacher. She worked in Chicago and Dayton, before settling in Minneapolis, Minnesota prior to 1930, where she ran the "Joy Studio". During the 1930s, she was instrumental in organizing the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America. She died in Minneapolis on October 18, 1978.
