Notes Bust view portrait of Clara Witzel Sterling. Clara Witzel Sterling was born in Oshkosh in 1860, the daughter of William Henry Witzel and Sophia Dahl Witzel. The family came to Oshkosh in 1852. Her siblings were Horace Mark Witzel, William C. Witzel, and Agnes S. Witzel. Clara started her dressmaking shop before 1883. At one point she employed forty seamstresses in her shop. She married Jerome Lee Sterling on August 12, 1886 at 94 Mill Street. They had three children together; Hope Agnes Sterling (died age 15), William Witzel Sterling, and Sophia "Phio" Witzel Sterling. Jerome died in 1912 and in 1915, Clara closed her dressmaking shop. Clara died on August 10, 1932.
