Farnk Edward Allen was born in Oshkosh, WI on December 17, 1885, the son of Edward and Jennie Castles Allen. His mother died when he was he was an infant. In 1900 he was living with his grandparents, Lawrence and Ann Allen, on their farm in Utica. By 1905 they moved into Oshkosh. He worked in an ordnance factory in Quincy, IL during World War I, and was living with his aunt Ellen Allen in 1930, and listed his occupation as railroad bridge builder.
