Notes Three-quarter standing view of Emma Marie Sawyer White. She is wearing a dark dress with white shawl covering her. She is holding her left hand at her chin in an artistic pose. Emma Marie Sawyer was the oldest daughter of Senator Philetus Sawyer. Born in Oshkosh on March 24, 1855. She was educated in Washington D.C. and attended Vassar. She married Howard G. White September 25, 1879 and moved with him to Syracuse, New York. Their one child, Sawyer Rich White died before he was 2 years old. Following her mother's death in 1888, she functioned as hostess for her father in Washington. She died there at her father's home from neuralgia of the heart complicated by malaria on October10, 1896 at the age of 41.
