Born in Massachusetts in 1794; graduated Harvard and Boston Divinity School; clergyman; Ph.D. in Europe (1817); US House of Representatives (1825-1835; Governor of Massachusetts (1836-40); US Minister to Great Britain in Tyler's administration (1841-45); President of Harvard University (1846-49); Secretary of State in Filmore's cabinet (1852-3); US Senator (1853-4); famous orator, spoke at Gettysburg for two hours with Lincoln, died 1865.
