Notes Bust view cut to oval shape of Edgar Philetus Sawyer wearing a dark coat, vest, white shirt, and white tie. He is bald on top of his head and wears a mustache and full beard. Edgar P. Sawyer was born in Crown Point, New York on December 4, 1842, the son of Philetus H. Sawyer and Malvina M. Hadley Sawyer. He came with his family to Wisconsin in 1846 and Algoma in 1848; managed his father's business of Brand & Sawyer Lumber in 1862; partner in 1864; invested in numerous concerns: National Bank of Oshkosh, Oshkosh Gas & Electric, Sawyer Cattle Co. in Texas, and others.Married mary Elanor Jewell on October 18, 1864 and had two children, Maria Melvina "Nia" Sawyer Chase and Philetus H. Phil Sawyer. Erected a Second Empire mansion on the site of the current Oshkosh Public Museum in the 1870's; torn down to build the present structure in 1908; donated house to city as a museum in 1922; died in Palm Beach, FL on April 17, 1929.
