Notes Full seated view of Joseph Holt wearing dark frock coat, trousers and vest. Holt was born in Kentucky in 1807; admitted to the bar and practiced law in Kentucky; leader in Democratic Party; appointed US Commissioner of Patents by Buchanan (1857); US Secretary of War (1861); appointed by Lincoln Judge Advocate General US Army (1862-75); prosecuted the Lincoln Conspirators, died in 1894.
