Notes Three-quarter seated view of Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney. He is wearing a dark frock coat, white shirt and bow tie, and a dark colored vest. Taney was born into a slave owning Maryland family in 1777; graduated Dickinson College (1795); admitted to the bar (1799); Maryland Attorney General (1827); US Attorney General in Jackson Cabinet (1831); appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1836-1864); supported southern views in tax and terriff decissions; passed down the landmark decission in "Dred Scott" case that no black person descended from slaves could be a citizen and that the "Missouri Compromise" or any act of Congress that restricted slavery in a state was unconstitutional (1857); at odds with Lincoln over suspension of the writ of habeus corpus; remained in office until his death in 1864, but was ignored by the Lincoln administration.
