Johann Sextus Arnold was born November 8, 1829 in Bavaria. He immigrated from Germany and arrived with his future bride, Catherina Barbara Schuri in the port of Baltimore on July 17, 1854. The couple were married in Oshkosh on September 26 of the same year. In 1857 he was working as a drayman in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He and his wife raised four daughters in Oshkosh: Emma Arnold Schmidt, born August 1855; Carrie Arnold, born March 7, 1857; Wilhemina "Minnie", born March 5, 1859; and Henrietta, born January 31, 1861. All the girls died in their teens or twenties, and only Emma lived to marry and have children. John died July 23, 1897.
