Nathaniel Ware, Jr. was born in New York on May 5, 1827, the son of Nathaniel and Mary Ann Winslow Ware. He was the Fifth Nataniel Ware in successive generations. The family migrated west and were farming in Rosendale, Wi in 1850. He married a widow, Mary Elizabeth (Neff) Scott on 29 Mar 1859 in Oshkosh, Winnebago, Wisconsin. In 1860 he was a real estate dealer in Oshkosh, living with his wife Mary and three children: William Scott, born in New York about 1850; Clara Scott, born in Wisconsin about 1853; and Winnefred Ware, born in Wisconsin about 1859. Two other children were born, Lora and Nathaniel (VI). He is listed in the 1868 Oshkosh City Directory as living at 128 Algoma. Nathaniel died on February 20, 1868 and his wife Mary on May 7 that same year, leaving the children orphaned.
