Group Photograph of ten young people, Phil Sawyer is fourth from left. He is wearing a wool overcoatcoat, and all are dressed in winter clothes. Taken in Madison, Wisconsin while he attended the University of Wisconsin.
Phil H. Sawyer was the only son of Edgar P. Sawyer and Mary Elanor Jewell Sawyer and the grandson of Senator Philetus H. Sawyer (for whom he was named). Born in Oshkosh on October 25, 1873; graduated University of Wisconsin, Madison; married Caroline Lucy Upham (daughter of Governor William Upham) in November 1896; worked for Edgar Sawyer in his business concerns; three children: Kathryn Upham Sawyer Harrison, Philetus H. Sawyer, Jr., and Edgar "Ted" Sawyer; his wife filed for divorce Dec. 22, 1905 on the grounds of "Non-support" and apparently never completed it since two of the children were born after this date; died in Chicago June 21, 1941 from a brain hemorrage.
