Ferne Vida Dollar was born on March 26, 1885 in Green Lake County, WI, the daughter of Harriett "Hattie" Hall and John R. Dollar. The Hall family had immigrated from Ireland in 1840 and the Dollar family had immigrated from Scotland in 1838. Ferne graduated from the "Model Department" at Oshkosh Normal School in 1903. She taught in Oshkosh from 1903-1906. She graduated from Columbia University in 1907. She taught in Reedsburg and Alma, WI from 1908-1912. She and her widowed mother moved to Oshkosh prior to 1920, where Ferne taught school for forty years. She died at Evergreen Manor in Oshkosh on December 4, 1971.
