Frederick Arnold was born in Bavaria, Germany circa 1811. He emigrated from his native Bavaria to the United States in 1835. On board with him were his fiancée and her companion Barbara Mack. During the voyage Frederick's fiancée died and was buried at sea. Shortly after their arrival in the United States, Barbara Mack and Frederick Arnold were married. Barbara was also born in Bavaria circa 1816. From 1835 to 1843 they lived in Cleveland, Ohio. Joseph, the second of seven children, was born there on May 17, 1842. The Arnold family moved west to Milwaukee, in Wisconsin Territory in 1843. The family is listed as residing in Milwaukee in 1846. In 1850 they were living in the First Ward of Milwaukee. They continued their western migration and in 1851 came to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. By 1857 Frederick had established himself as a soap and candle maker and the family was living at the northwest corner of River Street and Frankfort Street. The house is still standing as of 2006. Although their oldest sons, Frederick C. and Joseph, had moved out by 1860, Frederick and Barbara still had six children living at home: Sophia age 19; Leonard age 15; George age 12; Christian age 8; Lydia (Ida) age 4; and Lilly age 3. Frederick died between 1872-1876. Barbara died between 1895-1898. |
