ASH, Reuben - 2nd Lt., Company E, 2nd Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Reuben was born on Oct. 26, 1833 at Pennsylvania. He listed his age as 28 and his occupation as a clerk residing at Oshkosh, Winnebago County when he enlisted on Apr. 21, 1861. Standing over 5'10" tall, he had blue eyes, auburn hair and a florid complexion. He was assigned as above and was promoted to Corporal; Sergeant on Sept. 21, 1861 and then 1st Sergeant of that company. Reuben was wounded in the first battle at Bull Run, Virginia. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of that company on Jan. 1, 1863 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on Mar. 31, 1863. Reuben was taken prisoner at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was mustered out on June 28, 1864 at the end of his term of enlistment. Reuben was listed in 1866 as a clerk. He was then boarding at the Adams House in Oshkosh. He was listed in 1868 as a clerk residing at the Seymour House in Oshkosh. He was listed in 1870 as a grocery clerk residing in the second ward of Oshkosh. Reuben was married in Winnebago County on Dec. 15, 1870 to Grace Lawrence. Reuben owned a grocery busi-ness that was destroyed in the great Oshkosh fire of Apr. 28, 1875. As of June 1879, he was awarded a pension of $4 per month for a wound to his right shoulder. Prior to 1880 he had rebuilt his grocery at 12 Washington Street in Oshkosh. He was listed in the veteran section of the 1885 Wisconsin State census at P.O. Oshkosh. He was not found in the index to the veteran schedule of the 1890 federal census of Wisconsin. In an 1899 article by Col. Harshaw, Reuben was said to have died at Chicago, Illinois. He died on Mar. 25, 1891 and is buried in Oshkosh at Riverside Cemetery, Masonic Section, block F, lot 5. His next of kin was listed as a brother-in-law, R. Lawrence of Oshkosh.
