Martin Tewksburry Battis was born in Boston, Massachusettes on October 28, 1830, the son of William L. and Abigail Tewksburry Battis. According to his obituary and his son's biography, he sailed to California 1848 during Gold Rush and lived there until 1856. However, he is listed in the 1850 US Census residing in Boston with his parents and working as a locksmith. Also, on July 11, 1854 he married Sarah Ellen Osgood in Boston. He settled in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1856. The couple had three survivins sons, all born in Oshkosh: Harry Livingston, born October 4, 1857; Martin Teksburry, Jr., born about 1859; and Allen Prescot, born about 1862. He was a boiler manufacturer and owned the Union Boiler Works, and ran a foundry and machine shop at Beckwith, Davis, & Co. He was Oshkosh Fire Chief for 14 years, and member of the Common Council. He died in Oshkosh on September 23, 1885. His sons renamed the company Battis Brothers Boiler Works. |
