Ethel J. Bouffleur was born in Tacoma, Washington on April 14, 1894, the daughter of William A. and Mollie Cavanaugh Bouffleur. After High School she attended the University of Washington and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in education on June 21, 1920. In the fall of that year she began teaching art in rural schools in Pierce County. She went on to get her Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Chicago in June 1925. That fall she accepted the position of Art Director at the Oshkosh State Teacher's College. In the fall of 1928 she went to France and studied art. She was married to the Director of the Oshkosh Public Museum, Nile J. Behncke, on August 19, 1933. The couple had no children. During the depression she was appointed Supervisor for the Federal Art Project in North Eastern Wisconsin. She retired from teaching in July 1963, but remained active on the boards of several museums. She died in Oshkosh on October 7, 1985. |
