Jessica Ann Davis was born in Omro, Wis. in 1890. According to her death certificate she moved to Rockford, Ill. in 1912. She attended nursing school at the Rockford Hospital Training School and graduated on June 11, 1918. On July 1, 1918 joined the Army Nurse Corp. She was stationed at the Base Hospital at Camp Grant, in Rockford, IL, and served at Camp Hospital No. 52 in Le Mans, France, located in a former monastery that had been converted to receive patients. This hospital did not receive battle casualties, but operations were performed and large numbers of persons with influenza, pneumonia, mumps, measles and other diseases were cared for. It was not uncommon for nurses in Camp Hospitals to work 14 hours a day or longer. She received her discharge from the Army Nursing Corps on June 20, 1919. She worked as a nurse in Rockford, Ill until her retirement in 1959. She married a man by the name of Stigman who preceded her in death. She died June 14, 1964. |
