Edward Eastman was born and college educated in Randolph, Vermont. He married Sarah Tracy about 1836 and had one son: George Francis, and then married Catharine Granger June 3, 1841. The couple had three children together. He worked on his father's farm and put two younger brothers through college also. He came to Dodge County, WI in 1846, but soon established himself in a bookstore on Ferry Street in Oshkosh, WI that same year. He was one of the first settlers here. He became postmaster from 1846-1849, 1853-1861; Assemblyman for Winnebago County in 1850; Alderman; 1st mayor of Oshkosh, 1853. In 1849 he built a frame Greek Revival house on Washington Blvd, which was later torn down and the site became Roe Park. He died in Oshkosh in 1870. |
