Earl Ellsworth Fuller was born in Oshkosh, WI on April 9, 1894, the son of Ellsworth L. and Olive Fuller. He enlisted in Company B, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard and served in Texas during the Mexican Border War 1916. In 1917 Company B, became Company B, 127th Infantry, 32nd Division and served in France during World War I. He rose to the rank of 1st Sergeant. His brothers Ray Horton Fuller and Ralph T. Fuller were also members of Company B. (Ralph was killed by a German sniper on September 4, 1918 near Soissons, France during the Oise-Aisne-Marne Offensive.) Earl was slightly gassed on August 4, 1918, but returned to the company. He was severely wounded by gunshot wounds to the leg and chest on October 5, 1918 near Verdun, France. He returned to the United States and recuperated at the Base Hospital at Camp Grant, near Rockford, IL. Earl was married to Theresa before 1920 and the couple had at least four children. Earl was the County Treasurer for Winnebago County for many years. During World War II, three of their children served in the military: Rosemary (Women's Army Corps), Douglas (USN), and Earl Brice Fuller (USN). Earl Brice Fuller was killed in a plane crash December 27, 1943. He died circa 1979. |
