James Peterson Hanson, or Jens, was born circa 1837 in Denmark. He immigrated to the US and settled in Oshkosh when he was a young man. He enlisted on November 8, 1861 and was assigned as a Private, Company L, 1st Regiment Wisconsin Cavalry. He was discharged from that unit by a Surgeon's Certificate on March 11, 1863. He married Octavia Garlow in Winnebago County on December 12. 1864. Octavia was born in Denmark circa 1844. Jens reenlisted at Black Wolf on March 1, 1865 and was assigned Company C, 53rd Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry attaining the rank of Sergeant. Most of the company was then transfered to Company K, 51st Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry under orders dated June 10. 1865. The transfer was completed on June 30, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The 51st Regiment returned to Madison, Wis. on August 1, 1865 and was mustered out by companies, with the last being discharged on Aug. 30, 1865. He was mustered out on August 21, 1865. He and Octavia had several children: Helen "Nellie" L., born circa 1866; Walter, born circa 1869; and Daisy, born circa 1875. Jens was listed in the veteran section of the Wisconsin State census of Oshkosh. He was listed in the 1890 federal census as residing in the town of Oshkosh at P. O. Oshkosh and was listed in the veterans section of the 1895 and 1905 state census at P. O. Oshkosh. He died of acute appendicitis on August 6, 1913.
