Robert A. Hellard was the son of English immigrants, Robert and Mary Seville Hellard, and was born in Oshkosh on December 22, 1877. He worked as an office boy for the Oshkosh Times newspaper in 1895 and then worked in his father's newsroom and book binding shop. He took over the business after his father's death in 1905. He enlisted in the 2nd Wisconsin National Guard and rose to the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant by 1916. He served in the Supply Company on the Mexican Border in 1916. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant July 28, 1917 and saw service during Wold War I with the 127th Supply Company, 32nd Division. He was 1st Lieutenant at the end of the war in 1918. His main interest was in music and he composed and published over 70 known pieces from 1905 - 1947. He worked in Oshkosh as a piano tuner until his death on December 27, 1960. |
