Moses Hooper was born January 21, 1835 in Lyman, York County, Maine, the son of Moses and Mary Foss Hooper. His father died when Moses was only fifteen months old. He studied law at Amherst and Bowdoin Colleges in Maine. He came west in 1857 and practiced law in Neenah. In 1863 he settled in Oshkosh. He married Caroline Bailey in 1858 and raised five children: Albert B. Hooper; Benjamin Foss Hooper; Edward M. Hooper; Oren Hooper; Mary Hola Hooper Lang. He played baseball for the Oshkosh Everetts from 1865-1872. He was licensed to practice law in Federal Courts and specialized in water power law. After his wife died in 1875, he married Julia A. Lord, but they divorced about 1900. Hooper was a very physically active man, even in later life, and would walk to his home in Black Wolf Township every day after work. He built a stone house on Algoma Boulevard, now known as the Hooper-Oviatt House on the UWO campus. He then built another stone house on Algoma Boulevard, which is also still standing. He died in Oshkosh on November 12, 1932. |
