JACKSON, Heman B. - 2nd Lt., Company E, 2nd Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Heman was born circa 1838 at Ohio. His obituary provided his birth as July 24, 1837 at Naperville, Illinois. He studied law and then removed to Oshkosh, Winnebago County in April 1859 as a young practicing attorney. He was listed in the 1860 federal census as a lawyer residing with the family of James Freeman in the first ward of the city of Oshkosh. Heman resided at Oshkosh when he enlisted there on Apr. 21, 1861. He was assigned as a Private in the above company and he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of that company on Apr. 23, 1861. Heman resigned his commission on Aug. 5, 1861 due to a disability. He was married in Winnebago County on May 14, 1862 to Annette L. Harwood of Oshkosh. Heman was listed in 1868 as a partner in the firm of Jackson & Halsey and residing at 12 High Street in Oshkosh. That firm was responsible for building of the Grand Opera House in Oshkosh. Heman was listed in the veteran section of the 1885 Wisconsin State census at P.O. Oshkosh. He was listed in 1888 as a member of GAR Post #241 at Oshkosh. Heman was listed in the 1890 federal census as residing in the town of Oshkosh at P.O. Oshkosh. He was listed in an 1899 article by Col. Harshaw as residing at Chicago, Illinois. Andrew died of a cerebral hemorrhage at his home in San Diego, California on Apr. 26, 1924. Annette had died some five or six years earlier, also at San Diego. She and Heman had four children: Jessie Coralyn, married in Winnebago County on Sept. 25, 1884 to Alan Bruce Cook, died prior to 1924; Lucy "Lulu," married in Winnebago County on May 14, 1890 to Arthur Procter Smith of New York; Isadora, married to Charles Drain of Chicago; and Heman Harwood Jackson of San Diego. A man in California had possession of several diaries of Heman as of 1972. |
