Charles William Oviatt was born April 7, 1853 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of William and Cynthia Oviatt. His father was a carriage maker in Tallmadge, Summit County, Ohio where Charles first learned a trade. He was prompted to enter the medical proffession when his mother died of cancer about 1865. He attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago, graduating in 1887. He worked at Rush Medical College and was chair of Surgery at Milwaukee Medical College from 1896-1899. He married Petronella Gilbert from New London, WI October 27, 1887 The couple moved to Oshkosh about 1888 and had one daughter, Neita Oviatt, born February 12, 1889. In 1903 they purchased the Moses Hooper House on Algoma Boulevard, which still stands on the UWO campus. Dr. Oviatt died in Oshkosh on October 30, 1912 at the age of 59. |
