Edward L. Paine was born in Pomfret, Connecticut on May 29, 1801 the only son of Reverend Edward Paine. His mother died eight days after giving birth and his father remarried and moved to Pennsylvania that same year. He taught school as a young man and went into business at age twenty in Brooklyn, PA. He married Eleanor Ross. He later lived in Elmyra and Canisteo, NY. He organized an independent artillery battery in the Pennsylvania Militia and obtained the rank of Major, a title that remained with him the rest of his life. In 1854 he migrated west to Milwaukee, WI and in 1855 came to Oshkosh. With his sons, Charles L. Paine, and George M. Paine, they began C. N. Paine & Company lumber mill on the Fox River. A third son, Nathan Paine was killed during the Civil War. A fourth son was Doctor Edward R. Paine who resided in Milwaukee. His daughter married R. P. Elmore of Milwaukee. He retired from business in 1870. He died in Oshkosh, WI on June 15, 1893 at the age of 92. |
