RUBY, James N. - Capt., Company B, 34th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry James was born on Dec. 17, 1835 at Mt. Vernon, Knox County, Ohio. He was a son of James and Marcia A. (Reynolds) Ruby. The father was born in 1811 at St. Johns, New Brunswick, Canada and the mother was born in 1812 at New York. They were married on Jan. 1, 1832 at Malone, New York. The following spring they settled in Knox County, Ohio. In 1853 they removed to Wisconsin and settled at Baraboo, Sauk County. They removed to Berlin, Green Lake County in 1857 and to Oshkosh, Winnebago County in 1859. The father was a carpenter by trade and he died in Oshkosh in 1866 as the result of falling from a building. Marcia died in 1875 at Westfield, Marquette County. James, the subject of this sketch, left home at age fourteen years. For several years he was variously employed in different states. In 1853 he located at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and worked there as a painter for two years. James joined the Unites States Army in 1855 and served for five years. At the end of his term of enlistment he came to Oshkosh and joined his parents. James enlisted at Oshkosh on Apr. 21, 1861. Unmarried at the time, he stood 6' tall with gray eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion. He was assigned as a Private to Company E, 2nd Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and was promoted to Sergeant in that company. James was promoted to Sergeant Major of that regiment on July 16, 1861. He was then commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of that company on Aug. 8, 1861 and he resigned on Nov. 27, 1861. James reenlisted at Oshkosh on Dec. 2, 1861 and was commissioned as Captain of Company B, 34th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry He was mustered out on Sept. 8, 1863 at the end of his term of enlistment. James was married on Mar. 16, 1864 to Sarah J. Willoch. She was born on Jan. 9, 1844 at Lowell, Massachusetts and was a daughter of James and Margaret (Mason) Willoch. James and Sarah had three children: Margaret W., born on Mar. 26, 1866; Katie E., born on Feb. 5, 1868; and James M., born on Nov. 26, 1873. James was listed in 1868 as a carpenter residing at 83 High Street in the city of Oshkosh. From 1880-1883 he commanded Company F, Oshkosh Rifles, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard. He was listed in the 1890 federal census as residing at 401 Main Street in Oshkosh. James was listed in the veteran section of the 1885, 1895 and 1905 Wisconsin State census at P.O. Oshkosh. He was listed in 1905 as a rural mail carrier residing at 401 Main Street in of Oshkosh. Son James M. Ruby was also listed at that address. |
