Thomas Pember Russell, Jr. was born on Apr. 19, 1827 at Bethel, Vermont. He was a son of Thomas Pember and Martha Russell. The father was born on Aug. 31, 1792 at Windsor, Connecticut. When he was a young boy, his father moved the family to Windsor County, Vermont. Thomas Sr. was raised there. At a young age he was elected as Probate Judge for that district and he held the position for 16 years. Thomas removed to Wisconsin in 1854 and settled at Oshkosh, Winnebago County. He was attracted there by his son, the subject of this sketch. Martha, wife of Hon. Thomas Russell, was born circa 1792 at Vermont. Thomas Sr. was listed in the 1860 federal census as residing in the second ward of the city of Oshkosh. Residing with him were his wife and a daughter, Martha, who was born circa 1825 at Vermont. The family of Solomon Blodgett was also residing with him. Thomas Jr. was listed in that same census as a physician residing in the first ward of the city of Oshkosh. Sophia, his wife, was born circa 1830 at New York. Thomas W., their son, was born circa 1858 at Wisconsin. He was the only one of their three children to reach majority age. Thomas Sr. died in Oshkosh on Dec. 22, 1876. Thomas Jr. graduated from the Vermont Medical College in 1852. He practiced for two years at Weston, Vermont and then removed to Oshkosh. His wife of several years, Myra F. Edgerton, died at Oshkosh about 1856. Thomas was then married in 1856 to Sophia M. Edgerton, a cousin of Benjamin Edgerton of Oshkosh. Sophia was apparently not related to his first wife. Thomas Jr. enlisted at Oshkosh and was commissioned as 1st Assistant Surgeon of the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry on May 10, 1861. He resigned his commission in July 1861. On May 2, 1862 he reenlisted as 1st Assistant Surgeon of the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry. He resigned on November 29, 1862. In 1868 he was listed as Thomas P. Russell Jr., a physician residing at 12 Algoma Street in Oshkosh. Thomas was listed in the veteran section of the 1885 Wisconsin State census at P.O. Oshkosh. He was listed in 1888 as a member of GAR Post #10 at Oshkosh. He was listed in the 1890 federal census as residing in Oshkosh. Sophia died in Oshkosh on Dec. 14, 1904. Thomas was listed in 1905 as a physician and surgeon residing at 26 Algoma Street in Oshkosh. Son Thomas was also residing there. After an illness of just one day, Thomas died at his home in Oshkosh on Oct. 5, 1917.
