Richard Ehrich Salzieder was born in Prussia, Germany, on January 11, 1886. He was the son of Wilhelmina "Minnie" and Herman Salzieder. The family immigrated to the United States and arrived at the Port of New York on March 13, 1893. By 1900 the family was living in Oshkosh, Wisconsin where 14 year old Richard was working in a lumber mill. 1910 found Richard making a living as a woodworker for the Paine Lumber Company. On June 28, 1912 Richard became a naturalized United States Citizen. Also in 1912 he enlisted into Company F, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard as a Sergeant. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on October 15, 1914. He served with his Company on the Mexican Border in 1916 and on July 26, 1917 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He sailed with his Company to France and served there until June 4, 1918 when, by Special Order, he returned to the United States. He returned to Oshkosh and was one of the "Welcome Home" speakers when the Company came home in 1919. The next year shows Mr. Salzieder, his wife Lydia and their infant son Paul living in Oshkosh where Richard worked as a machinist. By 1930 the couple had two more children and Richard was working as a foreman in the lumber business. His hometown newspapers show him as an active man in both his church and veterans affairs. All efforts to locate the time and place of his death and his last resting place have been unsuccessful. |
