Stanley W. Smith, also known as W. Stanley Smith, was born in LaCrosse County in 1880 and graduated from Onalaska high school in 1898. He completed the three year law course at the University of Wisconsin in two years graduating in 1901. He was elected District Attorney of Ashland County and served two terms till he was elected to the City Council. He resigned his place to serve in the Army during the war. He served on the Mexican Border and in France. He was discharged Dec. 18, 1918 at Camp Hancock, Ga. After his service he returned to Ashland and was elected City Attorney. He was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 5, 1931. At the time he was suffering from syphilis. He died there on March 2, 1936. |
