Description |
Square clay tile with design of a simple face inside two circles, in the upper right section of the tile. Recessed areas of design are glazed yellow. Raised portions are the same color as the clay, a reddish-brown. A large section of grout remains at the top edge. Made/designed by Arts and Crafts Movement art tile maker Ernest Batchelder or his company, in Pasadena or Los Angeles, California. Design is a variation in his "Mayan" series, and resembles designs seen in Mayan artwork. Curved shapes come from below the two circles. Crescent shapes appear in upper and lower left corners. Per donor, the tiles in this accession came from her family's home at 1030 Washington Street in Oshkosh. The tiles were part of the front entryway floor. The "Mayan" design tiles were decorative tiles interspersed among plain tiles. Ernest Batchelder (1875-1957) first started making art tiles in 1909 and by the 1920s his tiles were appearing in buildings across the countery. At one point his company had expanded to employ 150 people. The company closed during the Depression in the 1930s. |
