Crest/shield design with detailed service record of Captain James E. Stuart, U.S. Vols, 21st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, 1862-1865. Grey background, gold, black, red, blue. Imprinted on corner hardware on canvas stretcher: "PAT/FEB/1883/JUNE/1885/ADS ". James E. Stuart was born in Forfar, Scotland on July 4,1842, the son of James and Ellen Stuart. The family immigrated to the United States in 1851 and settled in Oshkosh, WI. His father is listed as a house, sign, and ornamental painter in the 1857 Oshkosh City Directory. James resided in Oshkosh, Winnebago County, WI when he enlisted there on August 4, 1862. He was assigned to Company B, 21st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and was promoted to 1st Sergeant in that company. James was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of that company on February 4, 1863 and was then promoted to 1st Lieutenant on December 23, 1863. He was promoted to Captain of that company on August 31, 1864 and was mustered out on June 8, 1865. James was listed in 1868 as a mail agent boarding at 26 Church Street in the city of Oshkosh, the same residence as James Stuart, his father. James married Maria Elenor Roberts, of Iowa City, Iowa in 1870. James moved to Chicago about 1875, where he was appointed postal inspector in 1876. In this capacity he broke up many criminal rings and made hundreds of arrests. He enlisted in the 2nd Illinois National Guard in 1875 and served during the Spanish American War. He rose to the rank of Colonel and commanded the 11th Illinois Reserve Militia at Camp Lincoln in Springfield during World War I. He was eventually promoted to Brigadier General. He was still working as an inspector until his retirement in 1920. He lived in Chicago with his wife and adopted daughter until his death on March 8, 1931. He was buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Chicago where a monument was dedicated at his grave on November 15, 1931. |
