Fireman's; black deteriorated leather body, front and back brims; three rolled thin leather ribs front to back over top of helmet; black leather shield with a red leather border attached to body with two brass colored buttons, one "FD" and the other one looks like an upholstery tack; cut-out leather "1" with a crossed ladder and pike pole, "UNION" above and "OFD" below. Paper tag inside crown: "From EDWARD B. LEVERICH, BUILDER of FIRE APPARATUS, Fireman's Equipment, and every description of Fire Department Supplies Office and Manufactory, 20 Hicks St., one block from Fulton Ferry, BROOKLYN". Original catalog card: "Fire Department. Helmet. Worn by donors father - Orlando E. Carrier. Locality: Oshkosh." and "Helmet was property of Orlando E. Carrier. Member of first volunteer Fire Company, member of Hook and Ladder Co. The hand engineer and truck holding ladders and 'hooks' to help raze buildings were drawn by long ropes and milling (willing?) hands. They would reach a fire as quickly as it was possible to make the trip on the run. Mr. Carrier often rang the bell to give the alarm - its hoarse tones pealing out in the stillness of the night bringing dread to all who heard it. He was seretary (secretary?) for several years, 1861 - 1880. The 'bucket brigades' quickly formed, usually could gain control without fire spreading. These were the pioneer heroes of Oshkosh." Label from New Winnebago Room (2003-2018): The donor's father, Orlando E. Carver wore this helmet as a hok and lader fireman of the 1st Volunteer Fire Company. Mrs. Horton recorded that her father often rang the bell to give the fire alarm. Its hoarse tones pealing out in the stillness of the night brought dread to all who heard it. Hooks used to help raze parts of the bulding to get into ceilings and wall, and ladder were transported on wagons by volunteers pulled by hand. They would reach a fire as quickly as the men could run. Bucket brigades formed quickly and the fire was usually controlled before it got out of hand. |
