Description |
Square clay tile with design of a face in profile, facing to the left. Recessed areas of design are glazed a light mint green color. Raised portions are the same color as the clay, an orange-brown. Traces of grout remain on the edges and reverse. Made/designed by Arts and Crafts Movement art tile maker Ernest Batchelder or his company, in Pasadena or Los Angeles, California. Design is a variation in his "Mayan" series, and resembles designs seen in Mayan artwork. Person appears to be wearing a headdress. What appears to be a hand with index finger and thumb extended, and other fingers curled inward, is at bottom right of tile. Per donor, the tiles in this accession came from her family's home at 1030 Washington Street in Oshkosh. The tiles were part of the front entryway floor. The "Mayan" design tiles were decorative tiles interspersed among plain tiles. Ernest Batchelder (1875-1957) first started making art tiles in 1909 and by the 1920s his tiles were appearing in buildings across the countery. At one point his company had expanded to employ 150 people. The company closed during the Depression in the 1930s. |
