Description |
Model A-11 Flight Helmet: leather six piece construction; chamois lining; four steel snaps on front edge for attachment of oxygen mask; padded ear cups and opening on each side; plastic radio receivers on each side; electrical cord attached to receivers with plug on end; leather chin strap at bottom with steel buckle; hand-written in ink on interior of flap: 'APRIL 3 - 45 / MED". This helmet does not conform completely to the A-11 Flight Helmet and may incorporate changes made near the end of the war. It is unknown if this particular helmet is a prototype that may not have been massed produced. Mondl Manufacturing Company of Oshkosh made leather aviator helmets under government contract during World War II (1941-1945). The helmets contained a built-in radio headset and they were worn by aircrews and pilots. |
