Pattern 1881 Officer's double-breasted uniform coat: dark blue wool body and skirts; two rows of nine gilt brass State of Wisconsin buttons; three small gilt brass Wisconsin buttons on each cuff; black velvet stand-up collar; black polished cotton ling. A pair of gray wool riding breeches, which do not match, are associated with the coat. Used by Surgeon Frederick J. Wilkie, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard. Frederick J. Wilkie was born in Hanover, Germany on March 22, 1847. His family settled on a farm near Omro, WI circa 1850. He graduated from Rush Medical College in 1874 and established his practise in Oshkosh. He gave up his medical practice and organized many Humane Societies in local communities. He also served as the first city health officer and city physician. He was commissioned Surgeon with the rank of Major in the 2nd Wisconsin National Guard and assigned to the 2nd Regiment on April 19, 1882. His name does not appear on the rosters in 1898. He married Louisa Stevenson and they divorced in 1900. He then married Ida McDonald in 1902. He died in Oshkosh September 30, 1924. |
