Description |
Portrait of Christ kneeling at prayer in the garden of Gethsemene while three of his disciples are seen asleep behind him. Christ is illuminated by a heavenly beam of ligfht. The work is signed bottom right "Gustav Behncke." On the reverse is written in longhand with graphite pencil "Gift/lMrs. G. Behncke/1940/Gustav/Behncke/artist/1935." REMARKS:This painting used to hang in Trinity Parish Hall. Mrs. Gustav Behncke was a member of the church (listed on the 1900 and 1910 church membership rolls). Both Mr. and Mrs. G. Behncke were buried by the church, services for Mrs. Behncke's funeral were conducted at the church and Mr. Behncke's funeral was conducted by a church priest at Riverside Cemetary. Their son, Nile Behncke, was baptised at the church. |
