Gustav Behncke was born in Hamburg, Germany on October 2, 1853, the son of Jurgen Behncke. He immigrated to the US and on June 20, 1872 he arrived in New York harbor onboard the Calabria. He was 19 years old and listed his occupation as painter. He settled in Oshkosh Wisconsin and first appears in the 1879 city directory. He was an oil painter and church decorator in Wisconsin. He married Ida Heiss in Oshkosh on May 16, 1879 and the couple had at least three children, Esther, Mabel and Nile. He painted 175 churches as well as residencial interiors. In 1929 he was painting at his studio on Mt. Vernon St., Oshkosh WI. He died in January 1937. |
